What motivates you to run?
In the beginning, it was more about chasing PR’s and BQ’s. I enjoy going for a run now because I want to, not because a training plan tells me to do so. I enjoy good beer, bourbon, and food; running helps to maintain a healthy balance.
What is your goal for this year?
Currently, my focus has shifted to Cyclocross. Once the season ends in early December, I plan to start training for another BQ attempt in the spring at either Bayshore or Carmel.
What are you most proud of in your athletic endeavors?
2 BQ’s (2008-Bayshore Marathon and 2012-Carmel Marathon) and running the 2009 Boston Marathon
What is your go to workout song?
It’s a tie between Alex Chilton by the Replacements and Simple Song by the Shins. Alex Chilton has been on my playlist since I bought my first iPod Nano.
Where is your favorite place to workout?
Although I do the majority of my running on the Monon, running the trails at Eagle Creek Park is probably my favorite. It is great to have a park like that in the middle of the city.
What’s your favorite hydration product?
Water, as long as they haven’t turned off the fountains on the Monon. I’m too stubborn to run with a water bottle. Definitely a beer after, preferably a Bell’s Two Hearted.
What is your favorite in race nutrition?
Hammer Gel Espresso Flavor.
Phone or no phone on your run?
ABSOLUTELY NO PHONE. I am on my phone frequently throughout my day dealing with work matters. Running without my phone allows for time away from that.
When is your favorite time of day to run?
Mid to Late Morning. I am not the person that rolls directly out of bed and laces up their shoes. I like to enjoy a cup of coffee and wake up a little before I head out. On work days I usually try to get my run completed as soon as I get home.
What is your favorite memory during a race or training?
My first BQ at the 2008 Bayshore Marathon. I knew heading into my last mile that it was going to be close. I crossed the finish line with 19 seconds to spare.
How often do you race/how many races have you done?
In the last ten years, I have finished 24 Marathons/ 50K’s. I don’t race as often as I once did but have expanded into Cycling and Cyclocross racing. I still hope to squeeze in another BQ in the next few years.
What is your favorite running group and why?
Hills for Dinner! It forces me to step outside of my comfort zone. Throwing in exercises like burpees, air squats, pushups, and planks have added new elements to my workout regime. Before Hills for Dinner, I don’t think I had done a pushup in the last ten years. I still can’t do a cartwheel though.
